ENGLAND'S Euro 2020 final defeat triggered 12 crimes in Cheshire on Sunday evening.

Cheshire Police recorded 12 football-related incidents on July 11 with six arrests, although the force could not reveal their locations or the specific nature of the offences.

But they did confirm that most were predominantly domestic incidents after Gareth Southgate's much-revered side's crushing penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy.

A study by Staffordshire organisation Pathway Project found abuse surged by 38 per cent nationwide when England lost in previous World Cups.

Research found the number of domestic abuse cases reported to Lancashire Police force in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups increased by 38 per cent on the days when England lost.

This figure also went up when England drew, or even won. Many of these incidents were connected to alcohol.

"Here in Cheshire we recorded 12 football related incidents on Sunday 11 July and six people were arrested," Cheshire Police said in a statement.

If you or someone you know needs help with domestic abuse you should call the 24 hour domestic violence helpline number 0808 2000 247.
