THE UK Government will seek to end trade tariffs that have hit local ice cream van manufacturer Whitby Morrison.
Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss has promised to try and abolish the five per cent tariffs imposed on UK-made ice cream vans during upcoming trade negotiations with the US, Australia and Japan.
Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan outlined the difficulties the business, based on the Crewe Gates Industrial Estate, currently face when exporting abroad.
The world leading manufacturer of ice cream vans has been operating in Crewe since 1962 and the MP took up their cause in Parliament when he highlighted the "considerable"
trade barriers the business exporting to more than 60 countries worldwide. He asked the secretary of state: "Can you assure me that in trade talks with Japan, the US, Australia and other countries that we have ice cream vans on the list so we can back this great British export?" The politician responded: "I congratulate my honourable friend for his championing of this fantastic ice cream van business. "They are indeed a great export and currently face tariffs of up to five per cent with some of ournegotiating partners and it's something we will be looking at, removing those tariffs, as well
as other tariffs as part of the trade deals we're looking to strike." The local MP said the family-owned business is deserving of support. "The business has manufactured and exported high quality ice cream vans for over 50 years and I am delighted that the government will back this great British export in the up coming trade talks," said Mr Mullan.
