Plans to turn a vacant Crewe shop into an adult gaming centre have been recommended for approval despite objections from the town council and local MP.
The application to change the use of 240 Edleston Road has been called in to the southern planning committee by ward councillor Dawn Clark (Lab) and will be considered tomorrow (Wednesday).
She argues the proposal would be detrimental to Cheshire East Council's addiction policy, says there are other gaming centres in the town and there is inadequate parking.
Crewe and Nantwich MP Connor Naismith (Lab) has also objected to the application, arguing local councils no longer have to accept the 'hollowing out' of their high streets by gambling operators.
He said the proposal fails to support the social and cultural well-being required by the national planning policy framework, it contradicts high street recovery, will not generate footfall and is out of character with the application building.
Crewe Town Council has objected saying there is significant concern relating to public protection from gambling-related harm, particularly where specific areas are targeted.
It states: "This committee seeks assurance that Cheshire East Council will consider strengthened land-based gambling rules which seek to offer greater protection for the customer and aim to prevent children and other vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling."
Cheshire East's planning officer states in a report to tomorrow's meeting: "Issues have been raised regarding gambling addiction in Crewe and that this proposal could increase problems with addiction…
"There is no available evidence to support a reason for refusal based on gambling addition issues in Crewe."
The report adds: "The proposed use as an adult gaming centre can be considered as a main town centre use and is acceptable in principle.
"There would be no harm to design, amenity or any highway implications.
"The application is recommended for approval."
The southern planning committee meeting takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, October 21) at 10am at Delamere House in Crewe.
