Plans have been submitted to demolish a former Crewe town centre club for a temporary car park, after a retirement apartments scheme development collapsed.

This winter, applicant Mr. Paul Garry, of Gallan Properties Ltd, submitted full planning for the demolition of The Crozzy, Chester Street.

The applicant wants to bulldoze the post-war building for a 66-space temporary car park, including two disabled spaces.

Formerly known as the Crosville Social Club, the venue permanently closed in June 2024 (Ryan Parker).

McCarthy Stone had planned to build 51 apartments for the over 60s at the site, used as a club for almost 65 years.

The property company were set to demolish the existing buildings for the new retirement complex, along with landscaping and new car park.

In September 2024, McCarthy Stone withdrew the planning application it had submitted to Cheshire East, after failing to make progress with the design of the scheme.

McCarthy Stone said it remains committed to looking at "alternative sites" for a Crewe retirement complex.

Since then, the former club has been boarded up after being targeted in recent months by vandals.

The applicant wants to bulldoze the old Crozzy building for a 66-space temporary car park, including two disabled spaces (CEC Planning).

Windows have been smashed, walls are covered in graffiti and the interior is severely damaged.

A design and access statement reads: "The proposed use will not detract from the future regeneration of the site or limit the opportunity from the site.

"The existing building has been the target of prolonged and ongoing anti-social behaviour. The loss of the former social club is not considered to conflict with local or national planning policy.

"The use of the site for surface car parking is wholly appropriate in this location, set between two existing surface car parks.

"The minimal infrastructure required will uplift the local area and continue to provide a regeneration opportunity.

"The use of the surface car park enables users to travel sustainably onward, with direct access to public transport and sustainable localised travel that includes walking, cycling, and the bus network.

"The proposal will result in a short-term positive benefit to the local area, with the use of the site for surface car parking not affecting how the respective significance is appreciated or understood."

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Wednesday 19 February with a target decision date of Friday 14 March.
