Hospitality businesses in Crewe and across the country can celebrate as al fresco dining has become law - an opportunity to offer outdoor drinking and dining all year round.

The new law was announced by Prince Charles today (May 10), who delivered the Queen's speech.

Outdoor tables and chairs on the streets offered a crucial lifeline to food and drink outlets struggling to survive from COVID lockdowns.

Al fresco dining increased during the various stages of the pandemic, when restrictions were lifted but prevented seating indoors.

'Pavement licenses' were initially seen as a temporary measure, set to expire in September 2022.

The fast-track scheme reduced fees by £100 for hospitality businesses.

Delivering the Queen's Speech for the first time, Prince Charles said: "A bill will be brought forward to drive local growth, empowering local leaders to regenerate their areas, and ensuring everyone can share in the United Kingdom's success".

"The planning system will be reformed to give residents more involvement in local development".

Now, hospitality businesses across Crewe will be invited to apply for al fresco licences to Cheshire East Council under legislation.

The temporary powers becoming permanent will make life that little bit easier for business owners, still suffering from the impact of the pandemic.

Pubs will also benefit from the new laws. There is now an extension to off-licensing regulations that allows customers to takeaway pints and meals.

Additionally, local leaders have been granted more powers. In a bid to save the nation's high streets, council's are now able to force landlords to rent out commercial properties.

Prince Charles addressed parliament this morning (May 10) in place of the Queen (Ryan Parker).

This is part of a national aim to prevent vacant buildings from being eyesores for too long.

New Compulsory Rental Auctions will also make landlords auction shops that have been empty for over 12 months.
