Manchester United and England footballer gets married in Crewe
The captain of Manchester United Football Club has got married in Crewe - leaving his side's training ground early for a low-key wedding ceremony.
Harry Maguire left Manchester United's Carrington training ground shortly after midday yesterday (May 12), to head straight to Crewe Register Office, Crewe Municipal Buildings - marrying fiancee Fern Hawkins.
The couple, both 29, met more than a decade ago as teenagers - they plan to retake their marriage vows again at a chateau in France later this summer.
Guests were only notified of the venue (Crewe) earlier today - only a small group of family attended the afternoon ceremony.
The couple kept the wedding details secret from all but closest family and friends.
The professional footballer was seen wearing a white shirt, formal trousers and white trainers.
A Crewe resident drove past Maguire went he was outside Crewe Municipal Buildings, recognising his face but not knowing who he was.
Trish Lea told Nub News: "I thought he looked familiar.
"I passed a couple on the steps, but it was only a brief glance I was busy working (driving)."
Manchester United paid £80 million for Maguire in the summer of 2019.
This made Maguire the most expensive defender in world football.
The Manchester United Captain starred in England's Euro 2020 campaign, producing solid defensive plays that helped the country go all the way to the final versus Italy.
Maguire has been left out of Manchester United's side in recent weeks - the Red Devils have been out of sorts for most of the season, currently in sixth place.
A four nil defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (May 7), left United with their worst ever Premier League season points tally.
Maguire is the second professional footballer to get married in Crewe in recent years.
In March 2020, Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford got married at the same venue.
