Crewe residents slam 'saturated' takeaway proposals
Local residents have slammed a new Crewe eatery proposal - believing the area the is already 'saturated' with takeaways and restaurants.
Last month (August 26), Mr Dilshad Ahmed, of Crewe, applied for a change of use from an appliance store to a takeaway on Nantwich Road.
The former Waterloo Appliances store has been closed since April this year.
This month, Crewe resident of Westfield House, Nantwich Road, attacked the plans, saying: "Nantwich Road is already saturated by takeaways and restaurants.
"These takeaways are already causing significant traffic and pedestrian obstruction, whilst multiple drivers for food delivery apps wait to collect for customer orders.
"They wait on double yellow lines, wheels partially on the pavement, or in some cases the whole vehicle on the pavement.
"Our council needs to consider whether yet another food establishment is in-line with the plans to develop our town and attract interest."
On the Nantwich Road site, Mr Ahmed plans to install a till and takeout order point, dining tables, a conveyor pizza oven, Tandoori oven grill, donor meat kebab machine and a pressure fryer.
Also planned, is a cold room, pizza preparation area, chicken preparation area, a number of fridges and freezers - as well as storage areas.
Local resident of Alexandra Place, Walker Street, also criticised the proposals, questioning why there isn't a cap on takeaways per mile in Crewe.
They said: "Is there not a clause in the council guidelines to limit the number of takeaways per mile in any given area? Now is the time for consideration.
"It was introduced in Barking & Dagenham years ago so why not Cheshire East.
"The need for anymore fast-food takeaways surely cannot be justified , besides meaning another loss of A1 retail space on the Nantwich Road shopping mile."
Mr Ahmed also wants to install an illuminated restaurant sign - to be seen from across Nantwich Road.
Last week (September 22), Crewe Town Council objected to the plans, saying: The committee does not support the proliferation of fast-food outlets on the basis of risk of anti social behviour.
"This is as well as increased street waste and associated risk of vermin."
Cheshire East Environmental Health said Mr Ahmed has provided 'insufficient' information accessing the impact of the proposed development.
The target decision date for the proposed takeaway development is Wednesday 26 October.
