Local resident sees Crewe telegraph pole 'burst into flames' as road closed for hours

A local resident saw a Crewe telegraph pole 'burst into flames' ahead of him in heavy rain - immediately calling Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The incident on Newcastle Road, Shavington, happened at 2:39pm yesterday (September 22),

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Constabulary arrived at the scene within ten minutes - following a call from the Hough resident.

Crewe Police assisted with the road closure of Newcastle Road - lasting for hours (Crewe Nub News).

Mr Alan Jenney saw the blaze start in front of him when driving. He pulled over approximately fifty yards away and called the fire service.

Mr Jenney told Nub News: "I was on my way back home along Newcastle Road and a telegraph pole supporting overhead power ahead of me burst into flames - almost opposite the Esso Garage.

"I stopped about fifty yards short of it to call the Fire Service.

"It appeared to be a short in a junction box.

"When the copper in the cables started to melt, it was exploding bright, sparkling blobs a good ten feet into the road and flames lapped a few feet above the top of the pole like a giant match had been struck.

Crewe fireifghters stood by for safety and allowed the fire to burn itself out (Cheshire Fire and Rescue).

"I stayed until the fire engine arrived, then left for my own safety in case any cables came down."

Crewe Police assisted with the road closure of Newcastle Road - lasting for hours.

The fire engine from Crewe dealt with the incident - letting the blaze burn out itself.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a telegraph pole on fire in Crewe.

Mr Alan Jenney saw the blaze start in front of him when driving. He pulled over approximately fifty yards away to call emergency services (Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service).

"The power was isolated by Scottish Power and police attended to control traffic and for road closure while the incident was being dealt with.

"The crew stood by for safety and allowed the fire to burn itself out."
