Litter patrols stepped up around Crewe college campus after residents' complaints
A CRACKDOWN on littering outside Crewe's college campus has seen new bins put in place and council enforcement patrols stepped up.
Residents have complained about litter strewn over Dane Bank Avenue and Somerville Street, in particular vape packaging, near to Cheshire College - South and West.
Now Crewe West councillors Connor Naismith and Marilyn Houston have formed an alliance with local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), the college authorities and others to tackle the littering problem.
Weighted-down, lidded bins have been secured outside the college entrance on Dane Bank Avenue after reports that the bins would often tip over resulting in rubbish flowing down the street.
Cllr Naismith has met with Principal Dhesi and Richard Lunt, the college's director of estates, to discuss the problem.
The councillors also asked the Cheshire East Council's enforcement team to step up patrols in the area.
Since then PCSOs as well as Cheshire East enforcement officers have been out around Somerville Street and will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices where littering offences take place.
Cllr Naismith: "We are really encouraged by the collaborative approach we have seen so far by the college, police and council.
"The college is already undertaking some positive work to tackle the problem, including litter picking the area and reinforcing the importance of the proper disposal of rubbish to students.
"Residents deserve to feel proud of where they live and tidiness plays a big part in achieving that. We recognise there is more to do and we will continue to monitor the issue, working with our partners to improve the situation for residents."
