A COMMUNITY group from Haslington are laying on a Christmas Wizard of Oz trail with the backing of celebrities.

Haslington Volunteer Group wants to bring some festive cheer to the village with a socially-distanced themed event.

Volunteers are asking residents to dress up their homes in the theme of the classical Hollywood musical fantasy film.

The event has has received support from a host of star names, including Russell Grant, Celebrity Big Brother winner Alex Reid, Vicky Michelle of Allo, Allo fame, Linda Lusardi and Corry stars Steve McDonald and Denise Welch, some of whom have recorded video messages to help publicise the event.

Philip Garcia from the group said: "People are ordering props with a Wizard of Oz theme and there are others who have found scarecrows and ruby slippers to put up on their houses along with the usual Christmas stuff.

"We did one for Halloween and it was a great success and like that this is a socially-distanced trail where people can go around and take a look at the decorated homes in the village.

"We've already had donations of prizes and there is a real good feel about it all."

Residents are being invited to join in with the Oz displays up to December 18.

Haslington Volunteer Group has been in the forefront of building up community spirit in the area since it was formed during the first lockdown.

It's mission has been to help out during difficult times and its 480 volunteers have maintained a network food distribution to the elderly and vulnerable, while also running vital errands, such as collecting medical prescriptions for those screening.

A GoFundMe page raised up to £600 for the group's start-up costs, including printing leaflets to let people know the group were ready to jump into action.

"We did food packages from St. Paul's Centre and the Salvation Army's foodbank," said Phil.

"There are still people who are stuck at home and we go and get their prescriptions and give them lifts to any appointments. Our volunteers also take people shopping so they can get out again and build confidence."

There are 15 prizes on offer for those taking part in the Wizard of Oz trail.
