Grassroots returns: Crewe FC's comeback silences Grey Lambs and Sunday round-up
By Gwyn Griffiths 7th Dec 2020
CREWE conjured up an impressive comeback on their return to Cheshire League action after a four-week lockdown break.
Liam O'Reilly's side were trailing 3-0 at the interval against Lostock Gralam, but a change of ends at the Cumberland Arena saw a different outlook as they rammed in five goals to clinch a 5-3 win.
Keaton Webster set up Caine Mellor to pull one back shortly after the break. Then three goals inside six minutes turned the game around a PJ Hudson effort followed by a penalty from Nathan Southern and a fourth from Matthew Worrall to edge Crewe FC ahead in the 75th minute.
Hudson was then hauled down and Southern notched his second before both sides finished with 10 men after a late flare-up.
The win moves Crewe up to 11th in the Premier Division table and they are at Daten on Saturday (December 12).
The CREWE REGIONAL SUNDAY LEAGUE was back with plenty of goals.
In the Premier Division Russell Schofield bagged four for The Lions as they edged The Raven by a 5-4 margin. Danny May also converted from the penalty spot, while Robson Osman (2), Curtis Rogers and Sam Moreton replied for the hosts.
Betley were four up after just 18 minutes against NHB and eventually ran out 8-0 winners thanks to a hat-trick from Jamie Baker, two goals from Keiron Duckers and further strikes from Chris Robaszak, Simon Roberts and Steve Johnson.
The Faddiley versus Crewe Athletic fixture was switched to the Cumberland arena as the Faddiley pitch was waterlogged. A Jordan Amson goal appeared to have won the game for Crewe Athletic, but Richard Ford netted a last-minute equaliser for Faddiley.
In Division One Audlem were outplayed in the opening stages by Talbot who opened the scoring with a looping header by Dan Jones after 18 minutes and led 3-2 at half time.
However, a stirring second half come back from Audlem clinched a 5-3 win. Veterans Paul Bowker and Andrew Betteley were both on target, along with Seb Burrow, Ben Walker and Tom Capewell.
Dan Jones scored a second goal for Talbot, along with Harry Maclennan. Leaders Broadhurst FC dropped their first points of the season when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Sydney Arms. Brad West (2) and Tom Hassall scored for the top club, with Rhys Potter (2) and Joe Benson on target for Sydney Arms. In the Nantwich derby, AFC Talbot had to play for 85 minutes with 10 men after an early sending off. A long distance strike from Andy Stubbs looked to have won the game for Nantwich Pirates, but a late goal from Jamie Collina gave AFC Talbot a 1-1 draw to maintain their unbeaten record in the league. Princes Feathers beat Cuddington SC 4-3 thanks to goals from Mark Robson (2), Dan Larkin and Dean Richards. Winnington SC edged Sandbach Town in a high-scoring encounter. Both sides were ahead at different times, but Winnington prevailed by a 6-5 margin.Crewe FC 5, Lostock Gralam 3
