The Crewe and Nantwich MP pushed the new Prime Minister on Crewe's bid to become the home of Great British Railways – asking a question at her first Prime Minister's Questions.

After formally being made Prime Minister on Tuesday (September 6), Liz Truss answered her first PMQs yesterday (September 7) - with Dr Kieran Mullan questioning her about Crewe.

He put it to her that choosing Crewe for the GBR Headquarters would send a strong message of commitment to provide investment and growth to the places that need it the most.

Dr Mullan's question was followed by shouts of "give it to Crewe" from other backbenchers - clearly showing the wide support that Crewe's GBR bid has.

The Crewe MP asked: "May I congratulate the Prime Minister on her appointment and tell her that I know my constituents want her to succeed at a difficult time.

"Outside the immediate challenges of energy and inflation, levelling up remains a priority for them.

"One way to demonstrate her commitment to levelling up would be to choose a town such as Crewe to host Great British Railways.

Dr Mullan's question was followed by shouts of 'give it to Crewe' from other backbenchers (Dr Kieran Mullan).

"Will she ensure that levelling up is at the heart of that decision?"

Prime Minister, Liz Truss, responded: "Crewe is, of course, a great railway town — my honourable friend is absolutely right.

"I am not going to prejudge the decision that will be made, but what I will be doing as Prime Minister is absolutely focusing on levelling up and making sure that we are attracting the investment and growth into parts of this country that have been left behind, so that they have their fair share of opportunity."

The public vote for where the GBR HQ should be located closed on Monday (August 15).

The Secretary of State for Transport is expected to make a public announcement regarding the selected location later this year (Ryan Parker).

Crewe is up against Birmingham, Derby, Doncaster, Newcastle and York for the GBR headquarters.
