Two Crewe businesses have been hit with a zero-star food hygiene rating for this year - with another three receiving one-star ratings.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, is aimed at helping people choose where to eat out or shop for food.

The FSA scheme is in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A zero-star hygiene rating means 'urgent improvement is required' for the business (FSA).

It gives businesses a rating from 0 to 5 - displayed at their premises and online.

A zero-star hygiene rating means 'urgent improvement is required' for the business, whilst a one-star hygiene rating is slightly less critical stressing - 'major improvement is necessary.'

In June, Crewe Nub News, put together the list of Crewe takeaways which have been given a food hygiene rating of one-star or less this year.

Now, we take into consideration shops that have been given a low hygiene rating for 2022 - with new takeaways added to the list this Summer.

All information was taken from the Food Standard Agency website as of August 16:

A food safety officer from Cheshire East Council inspected the Crewe businesses to check that they were following food hygiene law so that the food was safe to eat.

At all inspections, the officer checked the following three elements:

  • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the physical condition of the business –including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and other facilities
  • how the business manages ways of keeping food safe, looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained. The officer can then assess the level of confidence in standards being maintained in the future.

The five listed Crewe businesses were rated zero-star and one-star based on all these checks.

Eight Crewe takeaways have now been rated one-star for hygiene this year (FSA).

Crewe now has two businesses with a zero-star hygiene rating and eight with a one-star rating for this year.
