A former newsagents opposite Crewe Alexandra Football Club which traded in the town for 40 years, is set to be converted into residential.

Applicant, Greg Hulme, who operated South Street News alongside his wife, Debbie, for four decades until February 2023, has submitted a change of use of commercial business and service to residential.

Mr Hulme, who closed the store to enjoy retirement, plans to convert the former ground floor shop, combining it with the existing first floor dwelling.

New ground floor windows have also been proposed at the front and side of 80-82 South Street (CEC Planning).

The current shop front, store room, private utility room, W/C and hallway will be reconstructed to form a living room, lounge area, dining room, kitchen and hallway, retaining the W/C.

New ground floor windows have also been proposed at the front and side of 80-82 South Street.

South Street News was popular with local residents, as well as Alex players and staff since launching in 1983.

The newsagents was even opened before Dario Gradi first became Crewe manager.

When closing South Street News, Mr Hulme told Nub News: "I am disappointed to leave this business but no one can carry on forever.

"The good thing about closing now is that this is my choice. I am not being forced out."

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Monday 7 July, with a target decision date of Monday 4 August.
