Crewe Alexandra made it back-to-back victories at the start of the season for the first time in 28 years - thanks to another goal from a former Premier League attacker.

The Railwaymen comfortably defeated Harrogate Town 3-0 on Saturday (August 8) - with goals coming from former Burnley forward, Dan Aygei, Kelvin Mellor and Courtney Baker-Richardson.

This was the first time since the 1994-1995 season, that Crewe had started the campaign with back-to-back victories - ending a 28-year duck.

Crewe named an unchanged line-up from the one that beat Rochdale the week before.

New Arsenal loanee, Arthur Okonkwo, kept up his solid form - keeping a clean sheet on his first professional home debut.

Fellow summer additions, Rodney McDonald, Conor Thomas and Lachlan Brook all impressed - with new additions Charlie Colkett and Khanya Leshabela coming on in the second half.

The Goals:

After controlling the majority of the first half, Dan Aygei, put the Alex 1-0 up once again with another header in the 44th minute.

Left-back, Zak Williams, side-footed a Railwaymen corner against the ground - with the ball rising up for Agyei to score from close-range.

Kelvin Mellor scored on his second Crewe home debut - heading home Callum Ainley's third assist of the season (Kevin Warburton).

Four minutes later (45+3) Crewe scored again. Kelvin Mellor got on the end of a Callum Ainley corner - heading home at the back post.

Then, just nine minutes after replacing Brook, second half substitute, Baker-Richardson, sealed Crewe's victory.

The powerful striker scored the rebound to his initial shot on Peter Jameson - netting his first goal for the club in the 77th minute.

Dan Aygei

Dan Agyei has been a constant nuisance for defenders in the first two matches of the season (Kevin Warburton).

Crewe Alexandra manager, Alex Morris, was thrilled with Dan Agyei's prolific form.

Morris told Crewe Alexandra's website: "Those Dan Agyei goals are more satisfying for us as a coaching staff than the ones where he might go past three or four players and curl one in the top corner.

"When he ends up on the goal line scoring - that's want to see from him, and the same from the other forwards too."

In the 2016-17 season, Agyei made three Premier League appearances for Burnley. He is showing his high-level attacking potential once again.

Both of Dan Agyei's Crewe goals this season have come from headers (Kevin Warburton).

The versatile English forward has fully settled into life at Crewe Alexandra - just six months after signing from Oxford United.

Agyei came to the Alex at the end of January - penning a three-year contract.

Agyei netted pre-season goals against the likes of West Brom and Rotherham. He has continued this fine form with goals against Rochdale and Harrogate.

The Manager's Verdict

Crewe Alexandra manager, Alex Morris, was delighted with Crewe's overall performance (Kevin Warburton).

Morris added: "I thought we showed two sides to our game.

"We were good in an attacking sense for periods of the first half, not as often as I'd have liked but you don't always get things your own way – the opposition come here to make it difficult.

"Ultimately, for all the territory and possession we had up the pitch, the first two goals came from set-plays which was pleasing because we want that to be a weapon in our armoury this year.

"In the second half we closed the game down really well, much more comfortably than we did last week.

Courtney Baker-Richardson scored Crewe's third and final goal on his home debut for the club (Kevin Warburton).

"Everybody contributed with their roles and responsibilities around the pitch and when you get 11 players doing that, you can get positive results."
