Motorists are facing 'severe' delays near Crewe, after a lorry overturned on the motorway.

On Wednesday 20 August, emergency services and traffic officers were called to a crash on the M6 between J16 for Crewe and J17 for Congleton.

At 8.16am, a lorry overturned into the barrier on lane one, leaving the driver with minor injuries.

As such, two lanes of the northbound carriageway have been closed, as confirmed by National Highways.

This has resulted in five miles of congestion on approach, with delays of at least 45 minutes. Recovery is at the scene.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson told Nub News: "At around 8.16am today, Wednesday 20 August, police were called to reports of a collision on the M6 northbound between junction 16 and junction 17 near Sandbach.

"Officers in attendance found that a HGV had overturned.

"The driver is believed to have sustained minor injuries and is being treated by paramedics at the scene.

"Lanes one and two are closed while recovery work is underway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
