Footballers who are fighting the flab in Crewe are set to cross the white lines at one of Cheshire's most iconic sports grounds - this week.

A group of players from Man v Fat Crewe will be playing a charity football match at the Mornflake Stadium on Sunday (April 24).

The Man v Fat players are a team made up of players from across Cheshire and North Staffordshire.

The players turn up to their matches at Apollo Buckingham Health Science Campus, Crewe Green Road, Crewe, every Monday evening.

They weigh-in and score goals for shedding the kilograms on the pitch.

The scheme aims to improve the physical and mental well-being of the guys.

Across the country Man v Fat now has over 4,500 players across 68 leagues. There are clubs currently operating in Crewe, Chester, Macclesfield, and Stoke-on-Trent.

30 players from the Crewe club will be preparing to host a friendly match at Crewe Alexandra's Gresty Road stadium on April 24.

Proceeds will be split between mental health charity MIND and MacMillan cancer support.

Event organisers Aaron Waywell, Will Ellis, Dale Cox, Dave Bourne and Paul Menzies wanted to give the men involved, a chance to play at one of Cheshire's most recognisable football stadiums.

Mr Waywell said: "All the lads at Man v Fat have been relentless over the last year in losing weight - and this is a great opportunity to showcase their new found fitness on the big stage.

"It promises to be an enjoyable occasion for all those involved and I'm immensely proud of what we've achieved as a team and how far everyone has come."

A study from Mind found that two in five men regularly reported feeling low. It also found men said they preferred the idea of physical activity or face-to-face therapy sessions when at low points.

Man v Fat Crewe coach Sam Thorne, of Stoke-on-Trent, said he is proud of how far the club has come since launching in 2020 - just before the coronavirus pandemic swept across the world.

He told Nub News: "The game on Sunday epitomises the spirit and togetherness of our community here in Crewe.

"All organised by the players, they have raised an astonishing amount of money for two great causes, and provided an opportunity to play at a league stadium for a lot of guys who would never have previously thought it possible.

"I could not be prouder of this group."

Each Man v Fat season lasts 14 weeks and last seasons players at the Crewe league shed over 100 kilograms.

Individual awards were won by those losing 5%, 10% and even 25% of their body weight.

The Crewe Man v Fat charity match kicks off at 10.45am this Sunday.
