Fans pay tribute to 'loyal' Crewe supporter who died after falling ill at match

Football fans have paid tribute to a 'loyal' Crewe Alexandra supporter who died - after falling ill at a home match over the weekend.

Chris Hagyard sadly passed away after falling ill at the Crewe versus Grimsby EFL League Two match on Saturday 4 February.

Crewe Alexandra officially announced the fan's death on Sunday morning (February 5).

A statement from Crewe read: "The Club are deeply saddened to report that Chris Hagyard has died after falling ill at the stadium yesterday. 

"Chris was a loyal fan and valued member of the Crewe Alex family. He will be greatly missed.

"Our thoughts are with Chris' family and friends at this difficult time."

Following the announcement, football fans came together on social media to pay tribute to Mr Hagyard.

Crewe supporter, Simon Hodson said: "Terrible news. Thoughts are with his family.

"I was there with my son waiting for the players to come out when the emergency services arrived.

Crewe supporters paid tribute to fan, Chris Hagyard, who sadly died after falling it at the match againast Grimsby Town (Ryan Parker).

"We knew it was serious but you always hope for a good outcome."

Football supporters from across the EFL paid paid tribute to Mr Hagyard on social media.

This included fans of Accrington, Barrow, Blackpool, Gillingham, Grimsby, Luton, Mansfield Northampton, Port Vale, Scunthorpe, Stockport, Stoke and Swindon.

Crewe fan and friend of Mr Hagyard, Dan Nixon said: "Rest easy my friend. It was a pleasure to have known you.

"We had some great days following the Alex. Condolences to all your family love Nixon."

There were several hundred tributes paid to Mr Hagyard across social media.

Football supporters from across the EFL paid paid tribute to Mr Hagyard on social media - including fans of Grimsby Town, Port Vale and Stockport County (Ryan Parker).

Crewe supporter, Lynn Davies, added: "This is so sad to read, puts football into perspective.

"R.I.P. Chris. Thoughts are with his family and friends."
