A new Community Grocery has officially opened in Crewe, transforming the long-derelict former Territorial Army centre into a vibrant community hub on Myrtle Street.

Launched at 10am on Tuesday, 17 March, the store forms part of the new Myrtle Building Community Hub, which also includes a Hope + Coffee café, Hope Church Crewe and Hope Tots toddler group, creating a welcoming space for local residents all under one roof.

The grocery is run in partnership by The Message Trust and Hope Church Crewe, and is the latest in a network of more than 30 stores across the UK, which have already supported over 80,000 families since 2020.

Inside, shoppers will find a full range of supermarket-style products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery items, frozen food, tinned goods, sanitary products and household essentials, at a fraction of the usual cost.

Membership costs £1 per year, with members able to shop multiple times a week and pay just £5 per visit, saving an average of £20 per shop.

As well as reducing food bills, the initiative also offers support courses aimed at helping people manage finances and improve wellbeing, bridging the gap between food banks and supermarkets.

Global Chief Executive and Founder of The Message Trust, Andy Hawthorne OBE, said: "Escalating prices are having a massive impact on everyone's lives, but for many it's made life so difficult that they are having to choose between heating or eating.

"We can't stand by and do nothing, so the Community Grocery is here to help and that's why we're opening a new store in Crewe.

"Bridging the gap between food banks and supermarkets, we're here to make it easier for our members to put food on the table by reducing the cost of the weekly shop, whilst also providing them with support and courses too. We can't wait to welcome people to Crewe Community Grocery."

Hope Church, serving the local community on Derrington Avenue since 2010, is now just a two-minute walk away at the new Myrtle Street site.

Pastors of Hope Church Crewe, behind the huge project, Emma and Phil Howell, said: "We are so pleased to welcome you to the Community Grocery and are excited about the help and support this will be to local people."

Crewe Community Grocery, Myrtle Building, is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm.
