Crewe horse put to sleep despite 'multiple attempts' to save animal

An elderly Crewe horse has been put to sleep after falling on its side - despite 'multiple attempts' from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to save the animal.

The incident on Groby Road happened at 9:18pm on Saturday (November 26).

One fire engine from Crewe, one from Lymm and animal rescue units from Bollington and Lymm attended the scene.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service arrived to find a horse that had fallen on its side next to a pond.

They used animal rescue straps and equipment to get the animal on firmer ground - attempted to get it back on its feet.

Despite multiple attempts, the team were unsuccessful.

The elderly horse had to be put to sleep by a vet.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "A horse that had fallen and was on its side in a field required two specialist animal rescue units and firefighters to attend.

"The elderly horse was next to a pond on its side and couldn't get up so a vet sedated the animal.

"The specially trained firefighters then used animal rescue straps and equipment to get the horse to firmer ground to try and get it back on its feet.

"Crews made multiple attempts to get the horse to stand up but sadly they were unsuccessful so the horse had to be put to sleep by the vet."

The elderly horse had to be put to sleep by a vet (Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service).
