The RSPCA is appealing for information after five black cats, including a mother and her two kittens, were thrown out of a van in Crewe, with three of them kept in animal hospital.

At 4.30am on Tuesday 25 November, an early-morning dog walker came to the rescue of the stricken felines and took them home after witnessing a crate, which the cats were in, being hurled out of the white van with a black roof on Ford Lane.

The walker contacted the RSPCA after she retrieved the cage from bushes in an alleyway, opposite to the entrance to Brooklands.

RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector, Caren Goodman, who is investigating, said the female cats were taken to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, where six to seven-week-old kittens and their mother remain, due to health concerns.

"These are very domesticated cats, they are not feral, and they were taken in this van, it appears, with the intention of abandoning them.

"The kittens are being monitored in hospital for now as they have both needed treatment for conjunctivitis, while their mother is also being kept in as she is a bit lean.

"The lady who found them was out walking her dog early in the morning and saw a van come skidding to a halt and then a dog crate being hurled out.

"She was shocked to find the cats were confined inside. There was no bedding inside it and the cats were sitting on their own faeces.

"It was also very cold at that time of the morning."

The cats are microchipped, but there are no up-to-date details on the chips.
