COUNCILLOR Nan Walton is to be the new mayor of Crewe.

The 77-year-old Labour stalwart was voted in by fellow councillors to take over the ceremonial robes for the civic year 2022/23 at Crewe Town Council's meeting on Tuesday night (March 29).

Cllr Walton has spent the last year serving as deputy to Town Mayor Cllr Tom Dunlop.

Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis has been elected as deputy mayor for 2022/23

The traditional mayor-making ceremony will take place at the annual council meeting on May 17 when Cllr Dunlop will hand over duties to Cllr Walton.

At that meeting Cllr Walton's appointment will be formalised and her civic year will begin.

Tuesday's council meeting also saw the arrival of a new face on the council as Kevin Murray was co-opted as councillor for the vacant Crewe West ward.
