The centre of Crewe has been invested in with new street furniture - featuring trees and flowers in newly purchased planters.

Crewe Town Council has worked with Cheshire East Council and Ansa to install twelve new planters on Market Street in Crewe town centre.

The wooden planters were purchased with government funding through the European Regional Development Fund and will feature a selection of colourful perennial flowers to brighten the street and bring spring to the town centre.

Crewe Town Council put forward the initial request to Cheshire East Council, and amelanchier trees have been purchased to further enhance the area.

The town council will be fully responsible for maintaining the planters in the centre.

The Crewe Rangers worked with a team from Ansa to install and plant the trees and flowers.

New pole planters and additional large planters have also been purchased through the scheme, which will be installed in early June.

Crewe Town Council said: "Every year we receive very positive comments about the floral displays in Crewe - however the original barrel planters on Market street were quite small and were showing their age.

"The new installation should help to improve the presentation and give a lift, to welcome visitors to the town centre and help to highlight the businesses along this stretch.

"The old planters will be removed shortly when the spring flowers have faded."

The people of Crewe gave their thoughts on the new planters - with a mixed reception.

Passionate resident Clair Chapman told Nub News: "I like them, they will look great in the summer."

Whilst many agreed with Clair - other locals believed that the project was a waste of money.

Alex Taso, a father from Crewe, stated: "Money would be better spent fixing the roads - unless they plan on using them to fill the holes."

Cheshire East Council is receiving up to £678,000 of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is the Managing Authority for European Regional Development Fund.

Established by the European Union, the European Regional Development Fund helps local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, create jobs, and local community regenerations.
