Crewe teen breaks record with 13 top GCSEs thanks to work–life 'balance'

A Crewe student has made history at his school by achieving 13 Grade 9s at GCSE, the highest possible grade in every subject, following a successful appeal in English Language.
Justin Nowak, 16, who studied at St Thomas More Catholic High School, Dane Bank Avenue, is now among a very small group of pupils nationally to achieve straight 9s.
He stands out for completing 13 GCSEs, including Computer Science, Art and Design, German and Further Maths making his success truly record-breaking.

Justin, who has lived in Crewe all his life, said he reached his results through consistency and keeping a balanced lifestyle.
The record-breaking student told Nub News: "I achieved 13 Grade 9s not through extreme and extensive revision, but by following a balanced approach to study and life.
"I gained 97 per cent in fine art, showing high achievement is possible in both academic and creative fields.
"Alongside this, I regularly trained at the gym and made time for my personal and social life, which helped me stay motivated and stopped me from burning out.
"When I first received my results, it felt like all my effort might not have paid off, but I didn't give up, I believed it was worth challenging.
"Having my appeal confirmed has shown me that even when things feel unfair or too late, persistence and fighting for what you know is right can make all the difference."

Justin explained steady, consistent study made the difference, saying: "Throughout school I always worked hard and gradually built up all the topics, and it came easier to me because of this.
"I reviewed a lot of content through past papers, they pretty much gave you the answers in a different form. The more you study them the more you know what to write and what they [examinors] want."
"I like to be very creative and bring out my passion for it with art. Art also preoccupied me and gave me balance. I also spent a lot of time with family and friends."
St Thomas More Catholic High School described Justin's achievement as a record for the school.
They said: "We are so proud of Justin, who has learned that his English Language mark has moved from an 8 to a 9.
"This means Justin has become a record-breaking pupil with 13 Grade 9s at GCSE. We are overjoyed for Justin, and his family are so very proud of him."

Looking ahead, Justin hopes to pursue a career in programming and believes students can achieve their goals with consistency and the correct work-life balance.
His message to other students is clear, adding: "They need to be consistent, please do not ever give up.
"If you keep doing what you are doing, things will eventually pay off."
