Crewe Railway Station is now served by the most train operating companies in the UK, after Lumo launched its new London to Stirling service this week.

The new FirstGroup-owned service began on Monday 25 May, adding an eighth operator at Crewe and further strengthening the Cheshire town's position as one of Britain's key railway hubs.

Lumo's new West Coast Main Line route links London Euston with Stirling, calling at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds and Larbert.

The launch marks the first direct West Coast Main Line connection for Stirling, removing the need for many passengers travelling between central Scotland and London to change at Glasgow.

A ceremonial first journey took place beneath the Wallace Monument in Stirling ahead of the official launch.

For Crewe, the arrival of Lumo further boosts a station already regarded as one of the busiest and most strategically important interchanges outside London (Photo: Ryan Parker).

Lumo says the service is designed to provide cheaper long-distance rail travel, with advance single fares starting from £29.90 between London and Stirling.

Tickets between London and Preston start from £23.90, while Preston to Stirling fares begin at £14.90.

The direct London Euston to Stirling journey takes around five hours and 56 minutes.

For Crewe, the arrival of Lumo further boosts a station already regarded as one of the busiest and most strategically important interchanges outside London.

Managing director of First Rail Open Access, Stuart Jones, said: "This is a very exciting moment in our journey to launching a pioneering new service for the West Coast.

"Customers can look forward to simple, low-cost fares with an excellent experience on our services between Scotland, the North West of England and London."
