Crewe shop could be partly converted into studio flats
By Ryan Parker 27th Oct 2026
Plans have been submitted to convert part of a long-standing Crewe carpet shop into two studio apartments.
The proposals, submitted by applicant, Mr Walters, to Cheshire East Council, would see part of the ground floor of Alec Ross Carpets, 37 Mill Street, converted from commercial space into two self-contained homes.
The shop, which sits on the corner of Mill Street and Herdman Street, has operated as Alec Ross Carpets since 2009.
If approved, the plans would retain a 29 sq. m retail unit at the prominent Mill Street corner, complete with its own toilet.
The two proposed ground-floor studio apartments would measure 38 sq. m and 37.8 sq. m respectively, with each designed for one person and featuring an open-plan living and sleeping area alongside a separate shower room.

The existing first-floor flat, owned by the applicant, would remain unchanged and is not part of the proposed conversion.
No extension or changes to the building's external appearance are proposed, with access to the new apartments provided from the Herdman Street frontage.
The plans also include a dedicated indoor bin store on the ground floor to serve all three residential units.
Planning documents say that bins are currently kept on the public footpath.
Moving them inside the building is described as a "practical improvement," that would help the street frontage and pedestrian access.
The last date for submitting comments is Wednesday 11 November, with a target decision date of Friday 4 December.
