Crewe school pupils unite to keep town park 'clean, green and welcoming'
By Ryan Parker 26th May 2026
Pupils from Crewe's Leighton Academy teamed up with local councillor James Pratt for a community litter pick at Leighton Brook Park, helping collect around 15 bags of rubbish from the playground, footpaths, and surrounding woodland areas.
The event, held in the sunshine ahead of the half term break, saw Year 5 pupils working together to help improve one of the area's most valued community spaces while also learning more about sustainability, recycling, and protecting the local environment.
During the afternoon, pupils spoke with Cllr Pratt about the importance of keeping parks and green spaces clean, as well as the role local communities can play in reducing litter and encouraging pride in the area.
Cllr Pratt told Nub News: "It was fantastic to spend the afternoon with the pupils from Leighton Academy in Leighton Brook Park.
"It was wonderful to speak with the students about how they feel about our area and to engage with them about sustainability, dealing with waste, and how we can all work together to look after our community spaces.
"The pupils were incredibly keen to get involved and worked really hard throughout the afternoon. They should all be very proud of the difference they made."

The litter pick forms part of an ongoing partnership between Cllr Pratt and the school, with this year marking the fifth consecutive year they have worked together on the initiative.
Cllr Pratt said: "Every year, we've noticed that the amount of litter collected has decreased, which is really encouraging.
"It shows how working together as a community can make a real difference to where we live and help create cleaner, greener and more welcoming public spaces for everyone."
Leighton Brook Park, Frank Webb Avenue, remains a popular destination for local families, dog walkers, and children using the play and sports areas, with initiatives like the litter pick helping to encourage young people to take pride in the spaces around them from an early age.
The Crewe St Barnabas councillor also thanked the staff from Leighton Academy who helped organise and support the event and to Crewe Town Council for helping to provide the equipment.
"A huge thank you goes to Mrs Smith, all the teachers and support staff, and of course the brilliant Year 5 pupils who gave up their time and energy to help care for our local environment," he added.
The event finished with the park left spotless for the half term holidays, with pupils praised for their teamwork, community spirit, and commitment to making a positive difference locally.
