A CREWE street was cordoned off as firefighters dealt with an unstable chimney at a home.

Two fire crews from Crewe and Chester used an aerial ladder platform to reach the chimney which looked on the verge of collapse at Richard Street at lunchtime on Saturday.

Fire officers discovered an unstable chimney stack and roof slate.

They set up safety cordons and working from the platform removed all the loose bricks and mortar from the chimney.

The cordons were later lifted following an safety assessment from a Cheshire East Council building control officer.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We handed the incident over to a building control officer from Cheshire East Council."

The fire crews were in attendance for around two hours and 45 minutes.
