Crewe retail park store to close down following administration
A Crewe retail park carpet store is set to close down following administration, with the rival who rescued them already having a store on the park.
Carpetright will permanently close 213 stores with the coming days, including Grand Junction Retail Park in Crewe.
Founded in 1988, Carpetright was one of the largest British retailers of floor coverings and beds. It has had an outlet in Crewe for over 25 years.
On July 22, Tapi Carpets and Floors agreed to buy 54 Carpetright stores, two warehouses, the brand and its intellectual property in a pre-pack administration deal.
Despite this, more than 1,000 jobs will be cut at Carpetright, including Crewe.
Tapi Carpets has been open on Grand Junction Retail Park since November 2023, launching next door to Carpetright.
The business was founded in 2015 by Martin Harris after he left Carpetright, the company his father established.
In the space of nine years, the carpet and flooring retailer has rapidly grown to operate around 175 stores across the UK.
The pre-pack administration deal will take Tapi Carpet's UK stores to well over 200.
Managing director of Tapi Carpets and Floors, Jeevan Kariri, said: "Our goal, initially, was to try to save all of Carpetright.
"However, as we looked into the details of the situation, we quickly established saving the entire business was unviable."
