A Crewe resident who was close to the epicentre of a 'scary earthquake' when it struck in Turkey - is helping to raise funds and awareness to those affected.

The 23-year-old woman who wishes to remain anonymous, was in Turkey with her mother Ayse (50) on the night of February 6 - half an hour away from Pazarik.

At 4:17am, the southern Turkish town was the epicentre of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck the country - followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake.

This was one of the deadliest earthquake events of the 21st century - killing more than 47,000 across Turkey and neighbouring Syria (as of February 21).

Tremors were felt intensely in surrounding provinces and cities - causing widespread destruction and collapsed buildings.

The Crewe resident who was woken up by the 7.8 magnitude quake, told Nub News: "It was 4:17am when I woke up. I didn't know what was going on but everything was shaking unbelievably.

"I'd never seen or felt anything like it. Really there's not much I can say to describe it.

"The reality of being there is far different that what is seen on the news and pictures.

"There was no internet or electricity for two days after, when it happened i messaged my best friend saying 'there's just been a huge earthquake' - I then couldn't contact anyone for two days.

"It was scary. I didn't know what was going to happen next.

"I was confused. The news is censored there so it wasn't the truth. Twitter was blocked so when I eventually got access to the world I couldn't access the information I needed."

On 20 February, a 6.4 magnitude tremor struck near the city of Antakya - injuring and killing more people.

Back in Crewe, the Crewe resident and her family are now trying to raise awareness of the events - asking for donations via a GoFundMe page.

The Crewe resident said: "Since making it home to the UK, my siblings and I have been trying to raise awareness and donations via a GoFundMe.

"We have decided to help those affected in the region.

"We've raised £1.5k and alongside personal donations from my family and best friends we have managed to raise over £2k.

The 'Earthquake Appeal Turkey' fundraiser page was created by sibling, Kazim Katranbayiri, on Friday 10 February - already raising £2,000 (GoFundMe).

"Some people I know personally have chosen not to put into the GoFundMe, because they deduct a certain amount."
