PASSENGERS changing trains at Crewe Railway Station can now wait at an award-winning Calm Corner.

Staff at Avanti West Coast have been recognised for their work in creating the tranquil oasis in a platform waiting room by community organisation Cheshire Best Kept Stations.

The corner is in stark contrast to the hustle bustle of platform life and has been designed for people with hidden disabilities in mind.

Staff have adapted a waiting room to provide a safe and calm environment, using features like grey and green colours to give a calming effect, a Living Wall and plants as well as specially designed furniture.

LED rope lighting that changes the brightness to suit those sitting in the corner as well as screens displaying images of old Crewe and a rasping totem offering helpful advice are also part of the scheme.

Chairman of Cheshire Best Kept Stations Mark Barker said: "The aim was to encourage people with hidden disabilities to have the confidence to travel by train."

The award along with other honouring stations in the county was made via a virtual ceremony last year because of coronavirus restrictions, but this week Cheshire Best Kept Stations were able to pay a visit to Crewe to make a physical presentation.
