A former Crewe pub looks set to be converted into a 13-bed HMO, if Cheshire East planners give the go-ahead.

The Duke of Bridgewate, Wistaston Road, called last orders for the final time in December 2024, with Crewe Nub News reporting the site was earmarked for residential in June.

South Cheshire Properties Ltd has now applied for permission to convert it into a house in multiple occupation.

A planning document submitted by Sloan Construction Consultancy says: "The owners decided to market the property having changed management personnel some five times in the seven years prior to the pub closing, and struggling to make a trading profit due to a decline in community engagement and an increase in operative costs."

It says the pub was marketed as an existing commercial property in February 2025 with an asking price of £275,000 and eventually sold in March 2026 for £225,000.

The document says during the time it was up for sale 'no interest in retaining the property as a community asset was expressed'.

This application is for change of use, extension and upgrading of the former pub.

The planning document says: "The works generally propose the sympathetic refurbishment of the existing property, a reasonable rear extension which is widely shielded from view, insulation and glazing upgrades and general cleaning/updating externally, in addition to a large, shared garden area for residents.

"The proposed refurbishment and extension works to the property have been considered carefully to respect the existing street scene whilst ensuring the property does not become permanently vacant or unusable, and in turn cause a degradation in the overall street scene of the area."

Each of the 13 bedrooms would have their own en-suite and there would be 'extensive shared kitchen space and a communal living area'.

The last date for submitting comments is Monday 12 October.
