CREWE and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan says he will donate any increase in his pay to charity.

The MP is critical of plans by the MP pay review body to uplift the salaries of Members of Parliament at at time when the UK's economy is reeling under job cuts and the winding down of the furlough system.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority currently increases MPs salaries in line with the current rise in average earnings increases in the rest of the jobs market.

The body is asking for views on their approach before making a final decision. It could see around £3,000 added to the current £81,932 basic salary.

But the South Cheshire said: "It's right that MPs don't set their own salary, but I just don't agree with what the pay body want to do.

"Whatever the numbers might be right now, with jobs being lost and the problems our economy is facing I don't think MPs should be getting a pay rise. We cannot be so tone deaf to the situation facing the country.

"I would encourage people to tell the body if they feel the same. Make sure your voice is heard."

"If in the end they do give a pay rise at the next review, I will be donating it to local charities. In the long run the salary of an MP shouldn't be one that means only rich people want to be MPs.

"We don't want it to be just people who have lots of money already, so don't care what they are paid. But right now an increase wouldn't be right."
