Crewe MP asks Keir Starmer to 'look kindly' on proposals to extend high speed rail past Birmingham

During this week's PMQ's, Crewe MP, Connor Naismith, asked Keir Starmer to "look kindly" on proposals to extend high speed rail beyond Birmingham, bringing regeneration back to the north.
Mr Naismith said: "Crewe in my constituency has a proud rail heritage, with Crewe station boasting unrivalled 360-degree connectivity to all four corners of our country.
"So, when the Conservative government took the decision to cancel the second leg of HS2 this was a great betrayal of my constituents, taking a sledge hammer to our town's prospects for regeneration and prosperity.

"So, will the prime minister look kindly on proposals to extend high speed rail north of Birmingham, utilising Crewe's unique strategic value to the rail network and bringing opportunity and prosperity to the north of England?
The Prime Minister confirmed Labour is "reviewing" its position on high speed rail, reiterating Mr Naismith's statements the Conservative government failed in their delivery of HS2.
He said: "He is right to highlight the importance of stronger and more reliable rail connections, improving journeys and driving economic growth.
"The party opposite utterly failed to grip delivery on HS2, costs went through the roof, timelines were shredded, false promises and atotal failure.
"We are reviewing the position we inherited and we are committed to improving rail connectivity across the north.
"We have already announced £450 million extra for the key TransPennine Route Upgrade [TRU], which will slash journey times, deliver growth and more reliable modern services for passengers."

Mr Naismith told Nub News: "I welcome the Prime Minister's positive reaction to my question, and his confirmation this government is reviewing the position it inherited with regards to HS2.
"Whatever the outcome of this campaign, I will continue to unapologetically champion the case for investment in Crewe and Nantwich."
