The nine Cheshire East towns with free car parking are Sandbach, Middlewich, Alsager, Handforth, Prestbury, Poynton, Bollington, Disley and Holmes Chapel.

The statement added: "If Crewe Town Council ran the car parks they could then decide to abolish the car parking charges.

"Crewe would be on a level playing field with the nine towns in Cheshire East that charge nothing for car parking.

"Such a move would be a big boost to the ailing Crewe town centre.
