Crewe is currently in gridlock with a trio of road closures causing traffic chaos, taking local residents over an hour to complete their journeys across the town.

David Whitby Way, Sydney Road and The A500 Shavington Bypass are all undergoing roadwork projects at the same time.

All nine miles of the A500 Shavington bypass, between Meremoor Moss roundabout and Cheerbrook roundabout, closed for maintenance on Wednesday 17 July.

David Whitby Way is currently closed for a full resurfacing, with completion of this project behind schedule (Ryan Parker).

Closed until 6pm on Wednesday 24 July (extended), the entire bypass is having resurfacing works carried out by Cheshire East Highways.

A section of Sydney Road, between Crewe Green Roundabout and Stephenson Drive, closed on Monday 22 July, with disruption expected for over five weeks.

These works are taking place for the new 146-home Sydney Place development, being constructed by David Wilson Homes.

The section Sydney Road is expected to fully reopen on Friday 30 August.

Local residents reacted to the road closures, with one saying: "What idiot decided it was a good idea to close the A500 Shavington Bypass, David Whitby Way and Sydney Road on the same day.

"It has taken me one hour and twenty minutes to get from the M6 roundabout to home. I am trying to run a business here."

Another said: "There is traffic all the way up Weston Road from Crewe Railway Station to Crewe Hall. This is absolute madness."

David Whitby Way is expected to reopen this week, with the A500 Shavington Bypass confirmed for Wednesday.

Explaining the A500 closure, chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, Cllr Mark Goldsmith, said: "This year will see the largest section of surface dressing undertaken for several years.

"Fortunately, it is a quick process, so disruption to the network should be kept to a minimum even though just over 250,000 square metres of carriageway, the equivalent of 35 Wembley football pitches, will be treated.

"We are aware that some of the roads we plan to treat such as the A500 Shavington Bypass, where works are scheduled to begin on Wednesday 17 July are busy routes and we will be keeping everyone updated with how works are progressing."
