A major residential scheme in Crewe is back on track following a new partnership between developer Lovell and housing association Onward Homes.

Construction has resumed at Signaller's Croft, off David Whitby Way, Basford East, after stalling in 2023 when the original contractor, Lane End Developments Construction Ltd went into administration.

Lovell, part of the Morgan Sindall Group, has been appointed to deliver the first 139 homes at the site, first launched by Onward in 2021.

Planning permission for Signaller's Croft was granted in 2020. The overall vision includes up to 449 homes, with future phases to include properties for open market sale (Paul Currie, via Cartwright Comms).

The homes, which will be developed over the next two-and-a-half years, include a mix of affordable tenures, such as rent-to-buy and shared ownership.

Regional partnerships director for Lovell in the North West, Tahreen Shad, said: "This new collaboration marks the exciting restart of a major development that will bring quality affordable homes to the Basford area of Crewe.

"The area is familiar to Lovell, having successfully delivered 99 homes in 2023 just over a mile away at Weston Woods.

"We understand the importance of building at scale and pace to meet local housing needs and will be using innovative timber frame construction to accelerate delivery."

The first phase of the Crewe project is being supported through Onward's partnership with Homes England, part of a wider goal to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2030.

Executive director of property at Onward, Sandy Livingstone, said: "We are very pleased to re-start activity at Signaller's Croft with our partner Lovell, a national builder of quality homes.

"Our commitment to deliver hundreds of affordable homes for people in the Crewe area has never wavered.

"We look forward to creating a vibrant place filled with modern homes that are both affordable for local people to rent or buy, and affordable to run in the long term."
