A Crewe hotel chain descended into 'chaos' with all guests being evacuated and moved to another venue - following a serious gas leak.

The 64-bedroom hotel called all guests to reception where they were told to leave the building with all belongings.

"It was chaos with people wandering round confused with suitcases," said guest, Monica England.

Holiday Inn Express found rooms for guests at Travelodge, Beswick Drive - 1.3 miles away.

Former South Cheshire resident, Monica, was in the Crewe area to attend two funerals.

She told Nub News: "I had booked three nights at the Holiday Inn Express in Crewe.

"On the Friday, around 7pm, I had to go to reception where I was told the hotel needed to be evacuated due to a gas leak.

Holiday Inn Express found rooms for guests at Travelodge, Beswick Drive - 1.3 miles away (Google).

"It was chaos with people wandering round confused with suitcases. I was frightened there would be an explosion. 

"They found me a room at the Travelodge, near the Duke of Gloucester pub."

A number of guests were waiting to be relocated to another hotel until the early hours of Saturday morning (January 7).

Some had to walk 1.3 miles to Travelodge with all their belongings.

Monica added: "I gave a lift to a young man from America who didn't know his way. Others got taxis.

"Some people had to walk and were still being relocated to the Travelodge in the early hours of the morning.

"I had to pay for the room at Travelodge. I was promised a refund from Holiday Inn Express for the night.

"It's been a lot of hassle and upsetting when I was visiting the area to attend two funerals of friends' relatives." 

Holiday Inn Express confirmed there was a gas leak to Nub News but didn't make a comment (Ryan Parker).

Holiday Inn Express is located just 0.3 miles from Crewe Railway Station and has since reopened.
