Crewe firefighters tackle large boat blaze on Nantwich canal

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service tackled a large boat blaze on a canal running through Nantwich - with Crewe firefighters assisting in the operation.

The incident on the Shropshire Union Canal, Chester Road, Acton, happened at 9:41 last night (September 14).

Five fire engines, including one from Crewe, quickly arrived at the scene - close to Nantwich Aqueduct.

A boat and an aerial appliance from also assisted in the operation - helping to tackle the fire.

On arrival, Firefighters boarded the canal boat with a hose reel jet to locate the blaze.

They quickly discovered the fire was coming from the boat's engine compartment.

Firefighters used a dry powder extinguisher to put it out.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "There was a fire reported on a boat on the canal near Chester Road.

"Firefighters in breathing apparatus boarded the boat with a hose reel jet to locate the fire, which they found was in the engine compartment." A dry powder extinguisher was used to put it out. 

The Shropshire Union Canal runs across the edge of Nantwich (Google).

"Gas and electric supplies were isolated and the engine bay was inspected with a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no hotspots."
