FIREFIGHTERS from Crewe helped rescue the driver of a campervan who came to grief on the M6 this morning.

The motorhome owner was left stranded on the hard shoulder after a wheel flew off the vehicle near junction 16 of the motorway.

Two fire engines, one from Crewe and one from Alsager, were called out to deal with the incident on the northbound carriageway at around 7.30am.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The campervan was stationary and the wheel was in the third lane of the motorway. The driver of the campervan was stood in a safe location.

"Firefighters made sure that the campervan was safe, monitoring its temperature with a thermal imaging camera, while Highways England recovered the wheel.

"Firefighters also used absorbent pads to soak up brake fuel that had leaked onto the road."

The fire crews were in attendance for more than half-an-hour before handing over to Highways England staff.

No-one was injured in the incident.
