Crewe fan escapes banning order after throwing flare onto pitch during match

A Crewe Alexandra fan has escaped a banning order - after throwing flare onto the pitch during an EFL League Two match in April.

Jacob Jones, 18, of Comberbach Drive, Nantwich, pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place during Crewe's 2-0 away victory to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday 1 April.

Jones attended Doncaster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 May.

The Nantwich resident was fined £40 and ordered to pay a £16 surcharge to fund victim services as well as £85 in court costs.

A charge against him of possessing a pyrotechnic, which are illegal at football grounds in the UK, was dropped.

Doncaster Magistrates' heard Jones picked the flare up off the floor after it had been lit by someone else.

The Crewe fan then raised it above his head and waved it before throwing it towards the pitch - resulting in the match being stopped.

After Jones was identified by stewards he admitted to the offence, claiming "it was near some kids and I wanted to get rid of it."

Jones has no previous convictions and is of good character, the court was told - attending the hearing with his parents.

The Crewe Alex season ticket holder has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), social anxiety and also suffers with his mental health.

Jones lives with his parents and is in receipt of benefits - reflecting his mental health issues.

The use of pyrotechnics, which are illegal at football grounds in the UK, are an issue across English football (Ryan Parker).

The 18-year-old has been handed a three-year ban from attending all Crewe matches by the club.

Jones is still able to attend matches at other clubs, with his fine, totalling £141, being deducted from his benefit payments.
