Crewe councillor calls in plans for new town centre gambling venue
By Ryan Parker 29th May 2026
Labour councillor for Crewe South ward, Dawn Clark, has called in the planning application for a new adult gaming site on Edleston Road, signalling a disagreement with the officer recommendations on the original application.
Adult gaming venues cater to gambling activities, usually through slots or fruit machines.
The applicant has submitted change of use proposals for 240 Edleston Road, formerly occupied by Poole Alcock Solicitors.
This proposed new adult gaming centre would be open 9am to 11pm, seven days a week.
The application will now be reviewed in front of a committee at Cheshire East Council instead of a judgement being made on officer recommendations alone.
As the representative for Crewe South, the neighbouring ward to that of 240 Edleston Road, councillor Clark can dispute applications on points of planning.

The address falls under the Crewe Central ward, represented by Conservative Councillor Roger Morris, who has not yet raised an objection to the plans.
The proposals will be reviewed at committee stage later this year, where Councillor Clark will set out the dissenting case.
Cllr Clark told Nub News: "We know that anxiety and stress, family/relationship difficulties, financial problems, and debt are the primary reasons driving people to gambling venues.
"As Mental Health champion for Cheshire East, I would not be doing my job if I didn't object to this planning application given its direct incompatibility with the CEC Gambling Strategy."
At the time of writing, there are eight objections registered against the application on Cheshire East's planning portal.
This includes, Labour MP for Crewe & Nantwich, Connor Naismith, who also registered his opposition to the plans.
Connor Naismith, Labour MP for Crewe & Nantwich, said: "It's fantastic to see a Labour councillor taking high street regeneration seriously and standing up for the best interests of businesses and residents in their area.
"I will continue to work collaboratively with local representatives to make sure that businesses with low social value, whether that's dodgy mini-marts, vape shops, or gambling venues, are scrutinised before creeping into our town centre."
