Crewe councillor calls for Mayor and colleagues to 'resign' over cult controversy

A Crewe non-grouped councillor has called for the Mayor of Crewe and other councillors to resign, following controversy linked to the promotion of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light and concerns surrounding the use of Webb House.

Cllr Allen Gage, of Willaston and Rope, spoke exclusively to Nub News, criticising the Mayor of Crewe and the Crewe West councillors, for straying from their core responsibilities, becoming involved in "public disarming engagement."

The local elected representative claimed the Crewe councillors, who took part in a 'Say No To Racism' counter-protest on February 28, have deleted Facebook posts after religious group members were arrested on 29 April.

Cllr Gage said: "Councillors should focus on the actual function of their roles, the basic functions of local services and maintenance.

"Using the position of local councillor to soap box, virtue signal or engage in various other nonsense is a disrespect to the role and a disrespect to the people of this area.

"Just get on with cutting waste, eliminating pointless bureaucracy and increasing efficiency.

"Being naive enough to (most likely unwittingly) allow yourself to be used by an unknown entity as public cover and what amounts to public disarming engagement is proof enough that these people are not fit for office.

"One councillor had her councillor ID round her neck. The Mayor has been stood pictured with them with the mayoral chains on at an official event she invited them to.

"The religious group put out publicity on their Facebook thanking a councillor for his visit and engagement. If he wasn't acting in his role as a councillor he would have corrected the record.

"Ignorance is no excuse. The rapid deletion of numerous online Facebook posts by certain councillors is telling, and damning.

"I am calling on the Mayor of Crewe to resign, and ask other councillors involved who have publicly engaged to consider their positions.

"This facility (Webb House) was one of the first items of planning I ever dealt with on the Southern Planning committee when I became a councillor in 2019.

"It was supposed to be a retirement home for the elderly with an on-site GP facility. The grounds and location adjacent to Queens park were ideal for residents able to get out and about.

"It was one of the most positive planning applications I have seen to this day. The building was originally created as an orphanage to serve and aid people in Crewe, the care home conversion would have respected and continued this ethos and local heritage.

"The current usage of this building gives no discernable benefit to the people of Crewe whatsoever in my opinion which saddens me every time I see or read about it."

Crewe Town Council defended the Mayor of Crewe and local councillors, saying they attended the counter-protest event in a 'personal capacity' (Photo: Crewe Town Council).

Cllr Gage's comments come amid ongoing public attention to Webb House, recently drawn into sex and modern slavery offences.

10 arrests have now been confirmed in connection with incidents involving members at the site.

Following this article, Crewe Town Council released a statement, saying: "For clarity, the counter‑protest referenced in some reports was not a Crewe Town Council event.

"The Mayor did not attend in her mayoral capacity or on behalf of the council. Any attendance by councillors was undertaken in a personal capacity.

"At the time of the counter‑protest, those present were responding to what they viewed as unwarranted hostility directed at the religious organisation on the basis of ethnicity.

"There was no suggestion at that time of the allegations that came to light yesterday."
