A date has been set for the closure of an 'unprofitable' Crewe convenience store chain and Post Office - with services coming to an end in early 2023.
McColl's convenience store with Post Office, Coleridge Way, will be permanently closing on Thursday 12 January, 2023 at 5:30pm.
This decision was made by supermarket chain, Morrisons, who plan to swiftly close 132 McColl's convenience stores.
In November, Morrisons said it would delay the closure of McColl's 55 stores with Post Office counters until next year - including Coleridge Way.
The supermarket chain bought McColl's out of administration back on May 9 - deciding to permanently close stores struggling to make profit.
Crewe's Coleridge Way Post Office will be kept open through the Christmas period but will shut down shortly after with McColl's
On Thursday (December 15), The Post Office confirmed an assessment was being carried out in the local area - with the intention of a relocation.
A Post Office spokesperson told Nub News: "We regret to confirm that Morrisons have taken the difficult decision to close some McColl's stores that hosted Post Offices.
"This is due to the unprofitability of the retail in that store - not helped by difficult high street conditions facing retailers.
"Morrisons have confirmed that they will keep Coleridge Way Post Office open throughout the Christmas period and it will close on Thursday 12 January at 5.30pm.
"We will undertake an assessment of the local area.
"We will be working closely with nearby postmasters to support them with the likely increase in footfall for both their Post Office and their own retail services.
"We are reviewing requirements for the local community.
"There are nearby alternative Post Offices that customers can use including Crewe Town Centre, Haslington, North Street, West Street and Readesdale Avenue."
Crewe's Victoria Centre is set to lose its Post Office services on March 18, 2023 - along with the closure of WHSmith.
The Post Office confirmed a new retailer is interested in taking the post counter on with talks at an early stage.
A vacancy for the loss of Coleridge Way Post Office will also soon be advertised.
The Post Office spokesperson added: "Earlier this year we were advised that WHSmith had made the difficult decision to close its stop in March 2023 where Crewe Town Post Office is based.
"This branch offers the full range of Post Office services and our priority is to relocate that branch.
"We have an interested retailer. Talks are at an early stage.
"The vacancy for Coleridge Way will also soon be advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk."
Coleridge Way staff members have been offered alternative employment at a nearby McColl's or Morrisons Daily store.
