Crewe company to make appearance on BBC TV series tonight
World famous Whitby Morrison will be appearing on 'We Are England' tonight - regionalised to BBC One North West, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.
Telling the story of people that make the country tick and representing the North of England, the episode within the documentary series is titled: 'Make Mine a 99 - Crewe.'
Operations Manager Ed Whitby told Nub News: "From watching We Are England, Crewe as a town and population will feel a huge sense of pride – and on many levels too.
"What other town can say that any given time, somebody somewhere is always smiling because of a product of their home? I think we're pretty unique for that, and those smiles are generated by the hard work and skills of our team – the majority of whom are from Crewe, too.
"As a family we're all from Crewe and proud of our roots; our future is here and that means the future of Ice Cream Vans belongs in Crewe too. The town is famous for the railway, Rolls Royce and now Bentley; Ice Cream Vans are on that list too.
The Crewe episode has been directed by Stephen Mizelas, famous for directing on other TV networks such as: Amazon Prime, Channel 4, Channel 5, Discovery and History.
A description on the BBC website reads: "In the 1960s there were tens of thousands of ice cream vans in England.
Today there are just 5,000. Most of them are hand built at a factory in Crewe. "The family-run business is 60 years old, but tough economic conditions mean that the company are now having to innovate to keep the business going. As the father hands over the reins to his sons, we'll also meet the workers behind the vehicle that puts a smile on everyone's face." Currently the business is run by Managing Director Stuart Whitby and supported by his two sons (Operations Manager) Ed and (Production Manager) Kris. Ed added: "For somewhere often mocked, I challenge you to find somewhere with as much diversity and opportunity as Crewe right now." Barbour jackets have now been chosen as the national focus ahead of Whitby Morrison, but the episode will still be aired in three UK regions. The ice cream van makers can't wait for the people of Crewe to tune in tonight. To view the first article about the tv appearance click here.
