The reopening of a Crewe cobbled road is finally expected to reopen at the end of the month (June) - five months after work started at the West End site.

Goddard Street closed to motorists on Monday 30 January and reopened on Wednesday 3 May, but this was short-lived to an issue with the cobbled road.

An initial eight-week road closure was pushed back several times - but is now expected to finally be completed at 5pm on Friday 30 June.

The initial road closure allowed United Utilities to complete drainage and water works for a new 73-home Guinness Partnership housing development.

United Utilities are installing a 225mm pipe drainage run beneath Goddard Street - lifting up the cobbled road and a Dunwoody Way roundabout in the process.

Works were completed by J&P Engineering Limited. Soon after, issues were reported with the cobbled road as parts of it dipped for motorists.

J&P Engineering have been on the site for the past month to sort the cobbled road issues out.

Goddard Street is one of the last remaining full cobbled roads in Crewe - along with Hill Street.

In February, Cheshire East Council confirmed the cobbled road would be 'fully reinstated' following the initial drainage works.

A council spokesperson told Nub News: "The works taking place in Goddard Street, Crewe, are being undertaken by contractors for United Utilities and concern drainage work.

"There is a condition that the road is fully reinstated with the cobbles that have been lifted."

Work officially started for the Goddard Street housing scheme in October 2022. It is targeted to be completed in 2024.

The development will see 31 two- and three-bedroom houses for shared ownership and 42 one- and two-bedroom flats for affordable rent (for over 55s).
