Construction begins on 73-home development in West End of Crewe
Construction has officially started on a 73-home development in the West End of Crewe - on the site of a former football club and pitch.
The Guinness Partnership has announced that construction work has started on its site on Goddard Street.
An event on Wednesday (October 12), marked the start of construction work on the mixed tenure development.
The 73-home development is the site of Crewe's former LMR football club and pitch.
The Goddard Street club was constructed in 1908 and finally closed in 2009.
Its football pitch was left untouched until clearing of the site began in March.
Senior members of The Guinness Partnership, Vistry Partnership, Homes England and The Mayor of Crewe came together to celebrate the start of construction.
Vistry Partnerships is the main contractor for the development on Guinness's two-acre site.
The scheme will see 31 two- and three-bedroom houses for shared ownership, and 42 one- and two-bedroom flats for affordable rent (for over 55s).
Located just 0.6 miles from Crewe town centre, the site is located close to public transport.
Group development director at The Guinness Partnership, Jon Milburn, said: "We have been working for many years on our plans to build new affordable homes at Goddard Street.
"We are very excited to have started work with Vistry Partnerships here in Crewe.
"This development will provide much needed housing in Crewe and contribute to Guinness's delivery of affordable homes under our Homes England Strategic Partnership."
Homes England is delighted it can help to deliver 'affordable' homes in Crewe.
The housing scheme was officially given approval in November 2021.
Senior growth manager at Homes England, Christine Hill, said: "Homes England is committed to supporting partners that have ambitions to build new homes and our investment through affordable housing grant allows us to do that.
"The development of the Goddard Street site is clear evidence of the impact our Strategic Partnership with Guinness is having in providing much needed new homes in Crewe.
The 73-home Crewe development is set to complete by mid 2024.
