CREWE Clean Team has recycled its 150,000th aluminium can.
The volunteer group says its 160 plus members are proud of the landmark, which represents 45 cans recycled on each day since its first litter pick in January 2012.
The vast majority of these cans have been collected as litter from the streets and open spaces of Crewe. Houston and Sons Ltd has supported the team by being ready to take consignments of any size.
Aluminium is a readily recyclable material, from 100 cans 95 can be manufactured, using just five per cent of the energy required to mine the bauxite and extract the aluminium for the original 100 cans.
The open cast technique used to mine the bauxite often leads to soil erosion and subsequent, long-term flooding. Drinking water supplies can be contaminated by the refineries that have to be built nearby.
Clean Team Chair Dave McDonald said: "Once in the process, a can will be back on the shelf in about eight weeks. So, by recycling, and preventing well over two tons of material from being added to local landfill sites so far, we are saving money and the planet."
Crewe Clean Team is not carrying out its usual, monthly, group litter picks at the moment but members are out daily, keeping their own areas free from litter.
