A CREWE church's long-awaited parish centre is rising from the rubble of derelict land.

Contractors have been working on the construction of the Saint Mary's Parish Centre on Delamere Street since November.

When complete the centre will include a public hall, rooms, an office and a kitchen for parishioners from St. Mary's RC Church to meet in.

The derelict site has been used as a car park in recent years, and some of the land surrounding the centre will be retained for on-site parking.

The scheme was driven by the ambition of Father Jerome Fagan, who launched a fundraising drive back in 2011.

A plea to the Diocese of Shrewsbury helped progress the scheme after a funding shortfall and planning permission was secured from Cheshire East Council in August 2019.

The Diocese had previously been planning to build a Caritas Hub in Crewe to meet the area's social and community needs.
