Crewe church's café gets £2,500 grant windfall to help out refugees

By Gwyn Griffiths 4th Feb 2022

A DROP-IN café has received a £2,500 grant to help its work supporting asylum seekers and refugees in Crewe.

Hope Café is based at Hope Church Central, the former Welsh Chapel in Derrington Avenue, where a range of support is available, including free food collections and practical help with phone calls and form filling, as well as social activities such as football and the provision of bikes.

The Café runs every Wednesday morning, while the football sessions are every Monday evening.

The grant, made by Crewe Town Council under its Community Grant Scheme will support this work and will be used towards food, clothing and equipment.

The award is one of two latest awards by the council, which allocates funding and grants up to £2,500 to community organisations for projects and activities that directly benefit the community.

The other community organisation to receive an award is the Swim Buddy project.

The project's £1,260 will support 10 disabled young people aged 18 to 25 so they can get involved in Aqua Fit and swimming sessions at Crewe Lifestyle centre.

The Community Grant Scheme is open for applications throughout the year, with quarterly submission deadlines for applications to be considered.

The next deadline is Sunday, February 20 (midnight).
